![]() The fabulously detailed environments look gorgeous in VR - China, in particular, left me gobsmacked. This happens more frequently if you're rushing through a level, but taking things at a slower pace helps minimise the problem.ĭespite all that, when Hitman 3 is behaving itself it's one of the best looking PSVR games I've played to date. On the Berlin dance floor, there's a surprisingly large amount of NPCs in play, but on the approach most rooms are fairly empty until the NPCS suddenly ping into existence. Once you're in a crowd, though, things are great. Draw distance also takes a big hit, meaning you'll spot a lot of pop-in on distant objects and, most jarringly of all, crowds. ![]() ![]() This is one of many corners that have been cut to make Hitman work in VR and while it doesn't affect the gameplay in any way, it does diminish the sense of presence. Take the glittering Dubai level, which when played in VR is devoid of any reflections. So how good does Hitman look in VR, considering it's essentially a last gen build running on what amounts to be the lowest resolution VR headset on the market? Well, it's a mixed bag. It's a faff, but you can claim the adapter for free from Sony - although it typically takes a couple of weeks to arrive. And, if you are playing on PS5, you will need the PS5 PSVR adapter in order to get your headset working on that console. If you own any of the Hitman trilogy games on PS5, you will only be able to play them in VR if you download and run the PS4 version of the game. If you didn't already know, Hitman VR is currently an exclusive for PSVR on PS4 (a timed exclusive, it would seem, though we don't know when exactly other headsets will be supported). That it works at all is a wonder, but there are a handful of caveats along the way, so here I'll run through what's good, what's not so good and whether it's worth investing for the VR experience alone. Alongside today's release of Hitman 3 is a welcome bonus - a mode that allows you to play through the entirety of IO's World of Assassination trilogy in virtual reality.

‡ Note that the current, “approved” method for implementing a non-Mac hosted TimeMachine is the Samba (SMB) suite. This model comes with a dual-core J3355 CPU and 4 x USB3 ports, making it quite a versatile little machine. † The AP35 is classed as a “mini-pc” (basically a device aimed at the set-top box market, but with an Intel CPU, rather than ARM). The “charset” lines are probably unnecessary (or at least will need local modification) for users outside of Japan. The “zeroconf” lines were essential (in my environment, anyway) to having the clients recognize the new server. Using “Xserve” shows a rack-mount server, but you can also try “TimeCapsule8,119” or “TimeCapsule6,116” to see two different versions of a TimeCapsule icon. The “Mimic model” setting tells the server which Apple device icon to display on the client machine. Once your configuration is up and running you can remove that line completely to go back to the default logging level of “default:note”. The “log level” setting of “default:debug” is quite verbose, but really helps with debugging problems during set-up. At other times the slightest tap will have you bounding down the grid to an unfortunate encounter with one of the "Mad Monks" (strange dudes dressed in blue robes who for some reason are protecting vast gold deposits and will slice you in half like a Jell-O pudding if they catch you). It sometimes takes two taps of a directional key just to turn to face that direction. Problem 1: The control, even if you modify your keyboard or hands, is highly unresponsive. Then you play the game, and guess what? You might have gotten an elusively comfortable control set up, but the game sucks. You just don't have enough fingers to really control this sucker effectively unless you really jinx around the controls long enough that any interest you ever had in the game is gone. It's insultingly awkward and it doesn't leave many free keys to perform all of the various other actions such as: let go, drop bomb, suicide, pick up/drop, use, and cycle bombs. Then try using q,w,a,s for zapping the ground in those directions. Don't believe my angry words? Just try using the keypad 7,9,1,3 keys for the directions I just mentioned. This means that control in this game has taken a terminal sh. This means that the four directions you have are North West, North East, South West, and South East. See, in LR2 the gaming world is an isometric grid. It was cool.īasically, Lode Runner 2 fails because it is attempting to make a side-scrolling 2D game into an isometric, fake 3D game. You ran around picking up gold, evading cops (or Mad Monks), blasting open holes in the ground, and dying quite a lot if you weren't slick. The basic premise was that you were some sort of thief who wanted gold. Lode Runner is sacred, it is the seminal Virgin Mother Mary Convict of side-scrolling arcade games. Hell, it was one of those games that defined what PC Gaming would become. ![]() ![]() There were about 100 levels of thievery and fun. The gameplay was fast, strategic, nail biting, and in all ways kickass. Back then it simply did not get better than Lode Runner. To its credit, OTWD is ingenious in how it handles the player vs. ![]() That they lack variety in appearance is a bit of a wasted opportunity, however: who knew there was such a generic bald person pride movement going on in Washington? As someone who consumes zombie media as mindlessly as the walking cadavers themselves, this was not an issue for me as I enjoyed creating walls of death with my teammates as we valiantly knocked back the hordes. Most of your time with OTWD will be spent caving in heads of Walkers, which may mean that you need to do some hand exercises to negate cramp - you will be clicking a lot. Comparisons to Valve’s mistreated franchise feel inescapable, but OTWD really has more in keeping with something like Vermintide or Dead Island, the latter more so because of how cobbled together it feels at launch. There’s nothing revolutionary here, but there should be enough to satiate The Walking Dead fans or anyone wanting their Left 4 Dead fix. It’s a shame, because Overkill’s The Walking Dead can actually be quite fun (in short bursts) and surprisingly deep at times. At this point in time, it’s like playing a proof of concept over the thing you’re paying a premium for on day one, a skeleton to be beefed up and fixed with future updates. Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a $60 game, but it never feels like it’s worth more than half of that, owing to the fact that it still feels half-finished on almost every level despite being in the works for four years. ![]() The earliest red flag for Overkill’s The Walking Dead is perhaps the most telling: there is no option for in-game voice chat, which is just as absurd a decision as it sounds for a game that prides itself on being a teamwork-focused and uncompromising affair. As a squad-based co-op shooter, you must work with your teammates to deal with Walkers, take down human opponents, and find far too many fuses. Truthfully, it might have been better calling it quits there.Īn adaptation of the AMC show, Overkill’s The Walking Dead shares the same universe but is instead situated in Washington instead of Georgia, which thankfully means 90% less walking around forests. That mystery was the running theme for the majority of the time’s game in development, it barely shown before it reanimated earlier this year with some fantastic CG trailers to introduce its characters. It’s been a long time since Overkill’s The Walking Dead was first announced with a cryptic teaser that revealed nothing, save for the fact that the Payday developers were branching out. Once in a while, in this age of faceless call centres, you come across a gem of customer service. They're even named "Clone Wars" and "THE Clone Wars". I will never get over how the former got two seasons of really short episodes and was generally forgotten, while the latter is this huge thing that gets season over season. You can't even give characters long hair or flowing capes unless you're determined to waste a lot of money and effort to render them. I guess it's still easy and makes things look "futuristic", that people don't care that it actually looks kind of crap. Likewise, things that are not of flesh and blood to begin with, but rather plastic and metal - such as dolls and robots, as Pixar has often proven - could be made pretty effectively and end up looking quite good.īut I still feel that rendering anything organic or such with CGI is a big mistake, and find it kind of perplexing it is so common. The rooms you mentioned were one: it would still reduce the amount of detail and clutter such a room could hold, but if it had nothing much in it to begin with, it could be easier. There are a few things CGI can do better, or at least easier and with little to no loss in quality. Or if a scene is set a room, you don't have to draw the room from different angles for each shot, because you've got something more akin to a film set that you can play around with and have a lot more freedom. which might be why some animators prefer CGI as well, because it means not having to redraw everything for every scene. I mean, once you've got a character looking how you want it's easy to dress them and pose them in different scenes. In my case, and probably most cases from looking at the 3D galleries, it's not much I tend to knock these things out quite quickly. I think it all just depends on how much time and attention to detail the artist is willing to make. And I get the same uncanny valley feeling from looking at those pictures, because of the asymmetry and proportions that aren't quite right (try mirroring Aerie's portrait to see what I mean). Imagine a whole animation done in the style of the BG2 portraits it would just look horrible. But I think the same rules apply to 2D as to 3D you have to simplify it and deliberately reduce the amount of detail, or it will just look freaky and wrong. I like 2D stuff the main source for it now is Japanese anime though. ![]() Why does no one else like traditional 2D stuff anymore? It's kind of weird how basically every animation made these days is CGI. ![]() But they do also rather reflect my opinion on why I think CGI can never, ever hold a candle to anything traditionally drawn: even the best stuff is, by comparison, blocky, plastic, undetailed, and neck-deep in the Uncanny Valley. As far as 3D rendering goes, these are pretty good. ![]() The two last bays, Takt 12 and Takt 13, were separated by high walls from the rest of the building and could be closed by water-tight floodgates. Two bays, Takt 9 and Takt 10, were underneath box-like structures on the roof that allowed the extra height needed for the installation of periscopes, snorkels and antennas. The bunker was to house 13 assembly bays (called Taktplatz in German, or Takt for short), each carrying out one part of the assembly process. Each would be built from eight, large, pre-fabricated sections manufactured in other shipyards such as Bremer Vulkan, Deschimag AG Weser with its bunker Hornisse, Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven with bunker Wespe and Deschimag Seebeckwerft in Bremerhaven, and then shipped to Valentin on barges. Under the management of the Bremer Vulkan shipyard, it would assemble U-boats. Plan of Valentin, taken from the 1946 US Air Force report on the results of Project Ruby Īfter completion, the bunker would have had a work–force of around 4,500 slave workers. Production of U-boats was due to begin within two months. īy March 1945, the facility was 90% completed and the most of the necessary machine tools had been installed. ![]() He had a lengthy post-war career, becoming one of Germany's most prominent civil engineers. Marineoberbaurat Edo Meiners was in charge overall the on-site supervising engineer was Erich Lackner. The design and oversight of the Valentin's construction was carried out by the Organisation Todt. Construction required 650,000 cubic yards (500,000 m 3) of concrete. Most of the roof is around 4.5 metres (15 ft) thick but part of it is 7 metres (23 ft) thick as the Germans began adding to its thickness before the bunker was even completed. The roof was constructed using dozens of large, reinforced concrete arches, manufactured on-site and individually lifted into place. The height of the structure is between 22.5 and 27 metres (74 and 89 ft). The bunker is around 426 metres (1,398 ft) long and 97 metres (318 ft) wide at its widest point the walls are 4.5 metres (15 ft) thick. A second bunker called Valentin II was planned as well. It was intended the facility would be used for the final assembly of Type XXI submarines, starting in April 1945 with three boats and from August 1945 a monthly delivery of a minimum of 14 boats. Under the codename Valentin a submarine factory was to be built directly on the Weser river between the Bremen suburbs Rekum and Farge. Other sites in Germany and other occupied countries were under construction or planned, such as Hornisse in Bremen, Elbe XVII and Wenzel in Hamburg, Wespe in Wilhelmshaven, Kaspar in Kiel. Many such sites were in use in 1944, including the U-boat pen Nordsee III on the German island of Helgoland, Fink II and Elbe II in Hamburg and Kilian in Kiel. Production of U-boats by German shipyards had been dramatically reduced as a result of bombing by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces, necessitating the creation of bomb-proof production sites. The Valentin factory was the largest fortified U-boat facility in Germany, and was second only to those built at Brest in France.Īs a manufacturing facility, it differed from conventional U-boat pens, which were designed to house and service operational U-boats.Ī roof truss of U-boat bunker "Valentin" is lifted into place (1944) The factory was under construction from 1943 to March 1945 using forced labour, but was damaged by air-raids and unfinished by the end of the war. The Valentin submarine factory is a protective shelter on the Weser River at the Bremen suburb of Rekum, built to protect German U-boats during World War II. |
